- Appetite estimate: light 2, regular 3, hungry 4 and children 1½ slices of a 14-inch pizza cut into eight. Adjust for sides, ages and leftovers.
- Changing the number of cuts changes piece size, not the amount of food.
- Pizzas are rounded up. Plan oven capacity and batches separately; one oven will not serve everyone at once.

How the numbers work
Feeding a group. The estimate counts slices, not people. A light eater has a couple of slices of a 14-inch pie, a regular appetite three, a hungry one four, and a young child about one and a half. When you pick a smaller pizza or cut it into more pieces, the slice count adjusts so everyone still gets the same amount of pizza. It rounds up to whole pizzas, and the drawing shows any spare slices.
Comparing sizes. A pizza's area grows with the square of its diameter. An 18-inch pizza has about 254 square inches of pizza; two 12-inch pizzas have about 226. That is why one large pizza is usually more food, and usually cheaper per bite, than two mediums. Add the prices to see the cost per square inch.
Sauce and cheese. Amounts scale with the area of the pizza and change with the style. A Detroit or Sicilian pan pie carries far more cheese per square inch than a New York round. The ranges run from a light hand to a generous one.
